The former Liverpool and United forward ran the rule over both of his former clubs as he assessed the current picture at the top end of the Premier League after the midweek matches

Michael Owen thinks both Liverpool and Manchester United, two of his former clubs, will secure a spot in the Premier Leagues top four this season.

Liverpool came within two games of completing a remarkable quadruple last season, however a below-par start to the current campaign saw them win just two of their first eightPremier Leaguematches.

Back-to-back victoriesover Manchester CityandWest Hamnow see them upwardly mobile though,Darwin Nunezs winner against the Hammerson Wednesday moving them up to seventh in the table and closing in on the top four.

United, meanwhile, also had a slow start under new boss Erik ten Hag, but a gradual improvement has seen them climb the table, and they put in probably their best performance under the Dutchman inWednesdays 2-0 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford, where Fred andBruno Fernandesfound the net.

Early season pacesetters Arsenal moved four points clear at the top of the table after Liverpools win over Manchester City at the weekend, and Owen believes that they will also finish in at least a top four place to secure a spot in theChampions Leaguenext season.

Well, it is tough, isnt it, to call the top four Owen .

Manchester Cityfor sure. I thinkChelseaare probably going to be in the top four.Arsenalas well. Its very hard to leave one out, isnt it?

Im actually torn betweenLiverpoolandTottenhamat the moment. Im going to say Liverpool, but how can you leave Tottenham out of the top four when they are playing particularly well as well?

Manchester United, theyve got a good chance. But theres going to be a massive team that everybody would expect to be in the top four that are going to miss out this year.

I do think Liverpool are still right up there among the elite. I think that even though Arsenal had a good start to the season and Liverpool are maybe ten points or so behind them, I still think that Manchester City and Liverpool are the top two teams in Europe for that matter.

So its so hard to say. Ill probably say Tottenham will miss out. I dont actually believe thats true, but I dont know who else?

When it comes to winning the title however, Owen is clear.

Well, Arsenal have surprised a lot of people, and I dont think its a fluke. When you watch their performances, theyve actually played really well, he said.

The good thing for them is that theyve got a young team. So you would think that energy and improvement will continue to come for them. So I dont think Arsenal are a flash in the pan at all. I think theyll sustain it. I think theyll have a good season.

But I think Manchester City are different class to anyone at the moment. I think theyve had a great start to the season.

Obviously they lost to Liverpool the other day, but they look so good in so many games. So I still think Manchester City will win the league, but I think Arsenal are here to stay.
