A 37-year-old was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol on Friday night - and its believed that man is a former Premier League footballer

A former Premier League footballer has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after causing significant damage to a building.

Cleveland Police announced a 37-year-old man was arrested after ploughing a black Land Rover Defender into a village store in Wynyard, County Durham at around 9:30pm on Friday night. The shop was left in a shocking state, but no one was injured.

The flat above the shop was evacuated for safety reasons, such was the damage caused. Photographers pictured the scene the following morning, with half of the car wedged inside the building and police tape used to deter nosey villagers.

The story hit the local headlines on Saturday but, as reported by theDaily Mail, it now appears the individual arrested by police is a former Premier League footballer. Police confirmed the man was released on bail on Monday pending further enquires.

A police statement on Saturday read: A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, after the black Land Rover Defender he was driving collided with the shop front of the Village Stores in Wynyard at around 9.30pm last night.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, but substantial damage was caused to the shop and occupants of the flats above had to be evacuated. The man is currently in police custody.

The identity of the former Premier League footballer has not been made public. Its believed the Land Rover is still stuck in the village shop, which remains closed.

One passing dog walker witnessed the damage on Saturday and made their feelings known toTeesside Live. Its ridiculous - when will drivers learn, they said. Residents now cant use the shop. I hope theyve being charged for the damage.

Possible punishments for drink-driving include six months in prison, a fine and a driving ban. If convicted, the former Premier League footballer will also see their car insurance costs rise significantly and may have trouble visiting countries abroad - such as the USA.

The shop which the former Premier League player ploughed into is known as The Village Store by the locals. Its a Co-op convivence shop and its temporary closure could be an inconvenience for some residents.

Wynyard is a small village located north of Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough. Its thought to be one of the most expensive areas in Teesside that includes several gated communities, a golf club and a large country house called Wynyard Hall.

Nearby clubs to the area include Middlesbrough, Sunderland andNewcastle.
